Project suspended, but continues

I suspended my one lens, one camera, one year -project, but only to change it a bit. Yes, you could it’s not the same any more, but I think it still kind of is. First of all, let me say, that so far it has not been a challenge at all, it’s been a lot of fun and I could go on pretty much forever. My choice of equipment has worked really well, but for some time I’ve wished for lighter and smaller gear. I have also wished for smaller files, because as a traveler my storage space is rather limited and the cloud services are really not an option on the road.

I’ve liked Canon mirrorless cameras ever since the EOS M5 and I almost took one with me when I left Finland last September. However, at last the minute I decided to stick with my existing camera for a couple of reasons, that haven’t been so important after all. I’ve been talking about a possible collaboration with Canon Finland for some time and finally, a while ago everything seemed to click together. As a result, I’ve been using the very new EOS M50 for about two weeks now. The M50 fills the above mentioned requirements nicely and adds a useful touch screen too. Altough the lens selection is a bit limited, there is a perfect lens for me, the EF-M 22 mm f/2, which is small and optically very good. The field of view of the 22 mm also equals to a traditional 35 mm lens that I was using with my previous camera.

So, in a way my project still continues, because I think the field of view is by far the most important measure here. How you see is based on the field of view and all the rest comes after that. Many lenses have a characteristic way to draw, but that is usually pronounced at wide apertures, which I don’t use that much. I tend to shoot a lot with my lens stopped down for ample depth of field. Besides, I think that little Canon glass looks quite pretty used wide open and even though it can’t isolate the subject like a true 35 mm it works really well for me.

Here are some pictures I shot in Hong Kong with the EOS M50, but I have to say my time in Hong Kong was not very productive, because a friend from Finland came to see me. We had not seen each others for a while, so we spent some time catching up over a few beers and did some sightseeing together. I had a great time, but didn’t make many pictures.

  1. Nice pics, nice colors. Especially your yellow car series. M50 seems to work greatly in your hands. Looking forward to seeing more pics.

  2. Very good project idea and great photos: I like how “full” they are but without loosing structure – I could never do that with a 35mm lens.

Thanks for your EF-M 32mm review on you tube: Chasing THE “single prime” for walkaround for 10 years I ordered one and will try to develop my skills in using a larger field of view (usually I like the 70-200 on my M50). The EF-M 22mm doesn’t work for me as I mentioned above 🙂
